Step 4: Secure the doors, shelves, and cord
An unsecured refrigerator door is the most likely single point of damage in this whole job, because it swings exactly when your hands are busy and it hits exactly what you were protecting.
Strap the doors closed with appliance straps or a band of stretch wrap run around the cabinet several times, and add tape only over the wrap, never onto the finish, because adhesive lifts paint and leaves residue on stainless. On a side-by-side or a French-door model, band the pair together so neither can open independently. If the doors have to come off for the doorway, remove them at this stage instead: hinge cap off, wiring plug at the top hinge disconnected gently if the model has one, bolts out, door lifted straight up and set on a blanket, hardware bagged and taped to the cabinet.
Everything internal comes out or gets fixed in place. Glass shelves, crisper drawers, and door bins travel wrapped in a box, not rattling inside the appliance. Anything not removable gets taped so it cannot slide.
Then the cord. Coil it, band it, and tape the coil to the back of the cabinet above the level of the base, never trailing and never trapped between the appliance and a wall. Step 7: Level it, then wait before you plug it in
At the new place, roll it in on the same technique, ease it off the frame with both people controlling the tilt, and set it in the alcove on its own feet.
Then do the setup work while the settling wait runs, because the wait is free time rather than dead time. Check the manufacturer’s clearance requirements around the sides, top, and back and leave that air gap; a fridge crammed flush to a wall runs hot and works harder forever. Level it with the adjustable feet or rollers, front to back and side to side, using an actual level rather than an eye. Most models are meant to sit very slightly higher at the front so the doors swing closed on their own, and the manual specifies it. Here is the mechanism, in plain terms. A refrigerator cools by circulating refrigerant through a sealed loop driven by a compressor, and that compressor needs lubricating oil. The oil lives in a sump at the bottom of the compressor housing, held there by gravity, and only a small amount is meant to circulate with the refrigerant at any moment. Tilt the appliance far enough for long enough and gravity stops helping: oil can run out of the sump and into the discharge line and the narrow tubing of the condenser and evaporator, which were designed to carry refrigerant, not a slug of oil.
Two problems follow. The compressor may start with less lubrication than it was built to have, and the tubing may be partially restricted where the oil settled. Neither is guaranteed, and plenty of tilted appliances survive without complaint, but both are the kind of damage you cannot see, cannot fix at home, and often cannot prove to a mover afterward.
That is also why laying a unit on its back is the version to avoid outright: the back carries components and coil structure that were never meant to bear the cabinet’s weight, and the oil geometry is at its worst. The settling wait is the direct consequence of the mechanism above: it is the time you give gravity to pull migrated oil back down into the compressor sump and let the refrigerant redistribute before the system is asked to run.
That framing explains why there is no universal number. The wait scales with how far off vertical the appliance went and for how long, not with the distance it travelled. The setup is strict. Clear and light the stairwell completely, pad the rail and the turn walls, put closed shoes with real tread on everyone, and confirm the appliance is strapped to the frame with no independent movement. The rules are the same in both directions and non-negotiable. One tread per spoken count. A full stop on every landing. The stronger person controls the downhill end. What one person can genuinely do alone: empty and defrost the appliance, disconnect the water line, strap the doors, wrap the cabinet, walk it out of its alcove on appliance sliders or a folded blanket, and, with care and a low stance, work an appliance hand truck under one side and strap it on.
